Once you have done your testing and become serious about using an Expert Advisor on MetaTrader, you would almost certainly want to host it in a reliable Data Centre so you can switch off your PC occasionally, reboot it when you want to install a new program or simply because you are concerned about the reliability of your Internet connection.
You go and start looking for VPS providers and many of them look good. The cheapest one you can find is about $27/month and they go all the way up to $150/month.
You pick one, install your MetaTrader and off you go… You’d think… Soon you may realise that when you disconnect using your Remote Desktop client, they automatically terminate your session and stop the MetaTrader 4 as well.
Off you go to the next VPS provider. You are now careful and make sure they don’t terminate your session when you disconnect. Everything looks OK now with this provider. Then after a month of happy usage the system is down for a whole day. Then next week it is down for 4 hours. You don’t get any notification and didn’t even realise it was down until you login 3 days later and noticed that your MT4 is not running and you’ve just lost a lot of money because of that.
It happened to me…..
This time I didn’t change VPS provider, but told them how disappointed I was with the service and they gave me a new server on a more reliable node. I had to reinstall all of the MetaTraders and EAs I use. Fair enough, things went well for another month.
I login on the weekend and notice my MT4 sessions are not running again. Oh yes, Microsoft is sending critical patches in the middle of the week and sometimes they need server reboots to apply them. It is OK with most normal businesses if the server reboots in the middle of the night during the week, but not for a Forex trader!
After a lot of hesitation I ended up approaching an enterprise hosting provider and enquired if they would take up the task of providing proper MT4 EA hosting.
I asked for the following:
– Provide a Windows server that doesn’t terminate user session when the user disconnects.
– Apply service packs only during the weekend.
– Provide a reliable service that doesn’t go down for long periods of time or, if it does, send email notifications to the users, so they know they need to re-start MT4 and check if everything is fine. I understand, sometimes problems happen, but at least I’d like to know about it.
– Make it cost effective
– Make it secure and ideally don’t just give full access to the server from the Internet, because EA users don’t need to run web servers on it.
Well, I found a company who is providing enterprise hosting and certainly have an experience to deliver the above. I asked if it can be delivered it for $29/month which is currently what I am paying. They said yes, as long as they have at least 100 people to make it worth while building this service.
I have written this article to ask. Am I the only one who is having problem finding a VPS provider who can host my EA’s properly?
If you, like me interested in such service above, please contact me and hopefully we can get enough people together to convince one of the VPS providers to provide a VPS service suitable for EA hosting and won’t cost an arm and a leg.
